Fecal Egg Counts and Resistance of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Beef Cow/Calf Operations in Oklahoma
Thank you for considering participation in this research project. Our objective in this experiment is to determine the degree of parasite resistance to different anthelmintic products. We hope to engage 30 to 50 farms across the state of Oklahoma. Please see the protocol summary below and if you are interested in participating, please fill out the form provided below.
Within each farm or ranch, we need:
- A minimum of 20 (preferably 30) animals that are within the same stage of production. (For example, classes of cattle enrolled in the study could be mature cows of approximately the same age, weaned calves, purchased growing and weaned steers or stocker heifers, or replacement heifers)
- It is required to have the availability of a good animal handling facility where animals can be restrained for safe fecal collection
- Fecal samples will be collected from these 20 to 30 animals through rectal palpation at two points:
1. The first collection must occur at initial processing/deworming or within seven days prior to that initial processing/deworming
2. The second collection must occur 10-17 days post-deworming.
Samples will be stored and labeled in sealed plastic sample bags. These bags will be provided. The collection date, animal identification, product name, dose, and batch number will be recorded at the time of the first collection. The collection date and animal identification will be recorded at the time of the second collection. The same animals should be sampled on both collection dates.
Multiple classes of cattle from the same operation can be included in the experiment if different anthelmintic products are used. Animals must not have been treated with an anthelmintic product within 60 days of initial sampling.
Oklahoma State University personnel will coordinate with the participant and extension personnel to be present at sampling time. Samples will be shipped to the laboratory as soon as possible and a summary of the results will be provided as soon as they are available from the laboratory.
If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out the contact information and information about your available cattle below:
